The boom at U.S. shopping ports is not even close to being over. Even with many economists stating that the nation is entering a recession, America’s ports continue to make historically high profits. The Long Beach, California, and Charleston, South Carolina ports report record highs.
Long Beach reported 890,989 twenty-foot equivalent units which is the second highest ever recorded.
Imports reached 436,977 TEUs which is the second highest for May. The imports reached over 30% higher than pre-pandemic stats.
Port of Los Angeles has experienced an impressive month with over 900,000 TEUs. Charleston saw 255,104 TEUs in May which included empties, imports, and exports. Which was an increase of 11% in the last year, which ended up being the third highest month in history.
- March 2022 (264,334 TEUs)
- April 2022 (264,099 TEUs).
The offshore waits did fall at many parts in May with fewer container ships waiting. In February there were 30 ships waiting off Charleston but last month there was only one waiting.
Currently, there is an ongoing process for getting through the offshore backlog. Support will continue for Long Beach and Los Angeles.
Recent reports do show a falling demand in the United States for imports. However, many predict an uptick in the near future. Currently, there are 92 container ships waiting along U.S. coastlines which is far shorter than in January when there were 150. Cargo is moving and the summertime surge should not prove overly problematic.
