Panama’s President Dismisses Claims of Chinese Influence Over Canal

Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, has categorically denied allegations of Chinese involvement in the Panama Canal and confirmed that U.S. warships pay the same toll rates as all other nations. His remarks come in response to recent statements by Donald Trump, who accused China of exerting influence over the vital waterway.

Speaking at a press conference on December 26, Mulino labeled Trump’s claims as baseless. “From Panama’s perspective, these allegations hold absolutely no truth. While geopolitical fears may exist elsewhere, they are not reflected in the reality of the Panama Canal,” he stated.

Mulino emphasized that the canal operates independently of external powers, including China. “There is absolutely no Chinese interference or presence in any aspect of the Panama Canal,” he affirmed. “The canal remains under Panamanian control, free from the influence of China or any other global power.”

Trump’s criticism of the canal’s toll structure and accusations of Chinese encroachment prompted a selloff in Panama’s bonds on December 23. Mulino reiterated Panama’s firm stance on maintaining control over the canal and expressed his intention to address these issues formally after Trump’s inauguration.

According to Mulino, transit fees for naval vessels are determined by the amount of water used and the ship’s classification, with the same formula applied to all nations. He also highlighted the canal’s strategic importance to the U.S., noting that in the 2024 fiscal year, 77% of the cargo transiting the canal either originated from or was destined for the U.S.

“There is no discrimination against any country’s warships, including those of the United States,” Mulino stated. “The Panama Canal belongs to Panamanians, and there is no scenario in which we would entertain discussions that challenge this reality.”
