The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) has secured a significant boost in federal funding, with a $9.2 million grant allocated for the continued development of a new cargo facility and aircraft parking apron at TF Green International Airport. This project marks a major step forward in the airport’s evolution, reinforcing its role as a key hub for commerce and economic activity in the region.
Federal Support for Strategic Airport Expansion
The $9.2 million grant, administered through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP), will fund the fourth phase of the South Cargo Project. This phase will see the construction of an additional 5,800 square yards (4,850 square meters) of new cargo apron, ultimately contributing to a total of 60,000 square yards (50,168 square meters) of new cargo space upon project completion.
The South Cargo Project is more than just an expansion of physical space; it represents a strategic relocation and modernization of cargo operations at TF Green International. The project will move cargo activities from the outdated 80-year-old hangar on the airport’s north side to the south side, adjacent to the new cargo building. This relocation will not only enhance cargo handling efficiency but also provide vital aircraft parking space directly next to the cargo facility.
Economic Implications for Rhode Island
Under the FAA’s AIP guidelines, federal awards like this one can cover up to 90% of project costs, with the remaining funds sourced from state or local contributions. This financial structure is part of the larger Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by President Biden in November 2021. The Act aims to direct approximately $45 million to Rhode Island’s airports over the next five years, ensuring continued development and modernization.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, both instrumental in securing this grant, highlighted the economic significance of this project. Senator Whitehouse emphasized TF Green International’s convenience for travelers and its potential to become even more commerce-friendly. “This federal funding will support an expansion of the cargo facility and increased economic activity in Rhode Island,” he stated. Senator Reed, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, added, “Our airports are engines of economic growth. I’m pleased to work with my colleagues to help land this grant for RIAC to improve and expand TF Green Airport’s cargo operations to better serve tenants and drive Rhode Island’s economy forward.”
Strategic Positioning for Future Growth
The funding for the South Cargo Project is a vital component of a broader strategy to enhance TF Green International Airport’s role in regional and national logistics networks. Last week, the airport made another significant stride with the opening of the first U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) air cargo centralized examination station (CES) in the country, with direct access to the Airport Air Operations Area (AOA). This addition further strengthens the airport’s capabilities, ensuring that it remains a competitive and efficient hub for air cargo in the Northeast.
As TF Green International continues to develop, the impact of these projects will be felt not just within the airport grounds, but across Rhode Island’s economy, bolstering the state’s position as a key player in the logistics and transportation sectors.
