U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has published a Federal Register notice outlining new tariff measures affecting imports from India.
The notice specifies that, effective August 27, 2025, Indian-origin goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses will face an additional 25% ad valorem duty.
An annex to the notice provides detailed modifications to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), including new subchapter III, chapter 99 headings. These adjustments outline article descriptions and duty rates under the general, special, and secondary duty columns.
The action follows an executive order issued earlier this month that directed the imposition of additional duties on Indian imports. The measures are tied to ongoing geopolitical and trade concerns, with tariff enforcement intended to increase pressure on supply chains linked to India.
CBP said the new HTSUS provisions will serve as the formal classification basis for applying the duties. Importers are advised to carefully review the annex to determine how their shipments will be affected.
Further updates and guidance are expected as CBP continues to roll out compliance instructions for the trade community.
