Products have been assessed as safe; In Brazil, 96% of corn production is already from transgenic grains
As of July 1, Brazil will import transgenic corn from the United States. The importation of genetically modified maize varieties was approved by the National Technical Biosafety Commission (CTNBio), the government agency responsible for this release.
The handling, processing, marketing, transport, import, export, storage and disposal of this corn were also allowed.
The government responded to a request made by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), which has been facing a shortage of corn for the production of feed for poultry and pigs. The sector complains about the high corn prices caused by the low supply of the national product.
In Brazil, 96% of corn production is already transgenic grains, and part of them is released for consumption. But each variety that reaches supermarket shelves needs authorization from CNTBio.
Corn, like other transgenic foods, can be modified in two ways. The first is a kind of natural selection, where grains of two or more varieties are mixed together. This can happen even in the field.
The second is the genetic alteration carried out in the laboratory. In this case, certain characteristics are united in a single product, such as resistance to insects, with tolerance to herbicide, obtaining a product with both benefits.
