MGM Resorts Bounces Back After Cyberattack, but Digital Room Keys Still Unavailable

MGM Resorts (MGM.N) announced on that its hotels and casinos had resumed normal operations, with the exception of its luxury Excalibur hotel and casino in Las Vegas. This comes more than a week after a cyberattack disrupted the company’s systems.

However, despite the recovery, MGM’s digital room keys and mobile check-in services remained unavailable on Wednesday. The company addressed this by issuing physical keys to its guests.

MGM Resorts, known for its portfolio of over 30 hotel and gaming venues worldwide, including locations in Macau and Las Vegas, fell victim to a cyberattack orchestrated by a hacking group known as Scattered Spider, as previously reported by Reuters, citing insider sources. MGM chose not to comment on the identity of the perpetrators behind the cyberattack.

In a statement on its website, MGM explained, “Guests at Excalibur may continue to see casino cashiers and slot guest representatives as we work to normalize operations.” Excalibur is a sprawling Las Vegas property that boasts both a hotel and casino, making it one of the largest in the United States.

Over the past week, social media posts documented hotel guests enduring lengthy queues and encountering dysfunctional gaming systems at MGM’s Las Vegas venues.

The company assured customers, “Our slot machine ticket-in/ticket-out systems are back up and running, and our casino cashiers and slot guest service representatives are happy to help guests who may experience intermittent issues.” While ATMs were operational, they were not providing cash advances or check cashing services.

Investment firm Jefferies provided insight into the situation, stating, “Indications from MGM confirming the cyberattacks should be taken as one-time, largely insurable events that should not have long-lasting impacts on the businesses.”
