Following a recent onboard incident, extensive recovery operations are underway aboard the Wan Hai 503, where response teams continue to work through significant structural damage and challenging cargo conditions. Sobel Network Shipping is closely observing the situation as key milestones are reached in the vessel’s cleanup and discharge efforts.
Complex Cleanup Work Inside the Holds
Several holds on the vessel still contain a combination of residual firefighting water and contaminated debris left behind after emergency response measures. This stage of the cleanup is labor-intensive and requires careful removal of water, soot, and compromised materials. Full clearance of these areas is an essential precursor before container handling can safely continue.
Structural Damage Creating Operational Challenges
Among the most heavily affected areas, deformed hatch covers and buckled steel components remain lodged over stacks of debris and damaged cargo. These sections cannot be removed without significant cutting, lifting, and dismantling using specialized machinery. Due to the vessel’s weakened structure, every movement is closely monitored to ensure hull stability and worker safety throughout the process.
Heavy-Duty Lifting Required for Damaged Containers
To access and remove damaged containers, crews are using large hydraulic grabs and industrial lifting equipment capable of handling compromised units individually. This container-by-container approach often extends overall operation time, but it remains the safest way to prevent further structural impact and reduce risk to personnel.
Discharge Progress to Date
As of November 9, 2025, approximately 987 containers have been safely removed from the vessel. An estimated 735 containers remain onboard, with discharge operations continuing in a controlled and methodical manner.
Coordinated Response and Industry Collaboration
Wan Hai Lines, working alongside onsite technical teams and safety experts, continues to address the complex challenges posed by the condition of the cargo and the vessel. Throughout the operation, priority has been placed on environmental protection, safe handling, and minimizing any potential secondary impact.
The carrier has expressed appreciation for the unified efforts of port authorities, specialized responders, and industry partners supporting the recovery work.
