The term ‘sustainability’ is bantered about a lot nowadays. However, can a supply chain achieve sustainability? If so, how do they even know that they have achieved true sustainability?
Understanding Supply Chain Sustainability
The definition of supply chain sustainability does differ, and you might wonder how you know if you have truly achieved your goal. Yes, the sustainability of the supply chain is defined in vastly different ways, and it does alter as time passes. Achieving true supply chain sustainability is not easy.
To attain sustainability, the process does not happen overnight. In fact, it is a slow ascent to the top. Companies have to develop a staircase attitude to reach their sustainable efforts.
Logistics Pursue Sustainability
MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics created the 2022 State of Supply Chain Sustainability annual report. It revealed that at least 80% of logistics firms worldwide continue to pursue sustainability. With so many disruptions in the last two years, it is commendable that the companies still make an effort to reach sustainability.
One of the representatives at a third-party logistic firm stated the following: “The visibility and the awareness of the supply chain, and with that, the attention that was focused on bringing different solutions to market gives us the ‘air cover’ that we need to offer things like EVs (electric vehicles) and distributed warehouse solutions.”
Conclusion
Sustainability continues to push third-party logistics. Most are deeply involved in extensive and increasing sustainable efforts that focus on their day-to-day operations.
It is also apparent that supply chain practitioners are widely involved in sustainability initiatives.
This year’s report shows that professionals’ direct involvement in SCS projects is extensive and increasing, and there is more awareness of this work in day-to-day operations.
