The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has scheduled an informal public hearing for February 7, 2024, focusing on the impact of Red Sea and Gulf of Aden conditions on commercial shipping and the broader global supply chain.
This hearing will offer a platform for supply chain stakeholders to discuss the impact of recent attacks on commercial shipping originating from Yemen. They will share how these incidents have disrupted operations, the measures implemented in response, and the consequent impacts. The session also aims to help the Commission collect data and pinpoint emerging issues caused by these disruptions. This may include consideration of new measures under the Commission’s authority, such as the introduction of emergency fees and surcharges.
Parties interested in participating or submitting information and comments can contact the Commission by emailing [email protected] before January 31, 2024. The FMC will later announce the panel members and participants, expected to comprise representatives from vessel-operating common carriers and shippers. Note that all participants are required to attend in person, as there will be no virtual presentation option.
The hearing is scheduled to take place at the Surface Transportation Board Hearing Room, located at 395 E Street, SW, Washington, D.C. 20423, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. It will also be available via livestream for those who cannot attend physically. Further details about the hearing logistics will be released in a subsequent announcement.
