Panama’s President Stands Firm on Canal Sovereignty Amid U.S. Threats

Panama’s Canal at the Center of Sovereignty Debate

Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino recently rallied support from former leaders and international allies to defend the nation’s sovereignty over the Panama Canal. This response came after Donald Trump suggested the possibility of reasserting U.S. control over the strategic waterway.

On December 23, Mulino convened with three former Panamanian presidents—Mireya Moscoso, Ernesto Perez Balladares, and Martin Torrijos—who signed a joint statement affirming Panama’s autonomy.

“As ex-presidents, we support the declarations of President Jose Raul Mulino, and we unite under the affirmation that the sovereignty and independence of our country and our canal are not negotiable,” the statement declared, underscoring a unified national stance.

Canal Authority and International Support

Former administrators of the Panama Canal Authority also rejected Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that there is no legal mechanism through which the U.S. could take back control of the canal.

Mulino publicly rebuked Trump’s assertions, which cited concerns over Chinese influence and high tolls for U.S. ships. These comments not only stirred diplomatic tensions but also triggered a financial reaction, leading to a selloff of Panama’s bonds on December 23.

In a show of regional solidarity, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum voiced her support for Panama, underscoring the importance of protecting the sovereignty of Latin American nations.

A Global Trade Lifeline

Taking to social media, President Mulino reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to its independence and its role in fostering global trade through the canal. “The canal is and will be Panamanian, fostering world trade,” Mulino stated.

The Panama Canal, a critical artery for international commerce, remains a symbol of national pride and sovereignty for Panamanians. Amid global scrutiny, President Mulino’s leadership has drawn attention to the ongoing importance of respecting national autonomy in managing vital global trade infrastructure.
